about

In 1979, a popular uprising in Nicaragua overthrew the tyranny of the dictator Somoza. The “Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional — FSLN” (Sandinista National Liberation Front) — also known as the Sandinistas to this day — led the Nicaraguan people in a revolution that would bring freedom and self-determination to the country and serve primarily the rural and urban poor.

In early 1980, the right-wing conservative Ronald Reagan took over the presidency in the United States and very quickly moved away from his democratic predecessor’s “neutral” stance toward the Nicaraguan revolution. He used all means of economic and political pressure, as well as intelligence and military actions, against the young Nicaraguan government.

A broad movement of solidarity with Nicaragua was formed throughout the world, and also in support of the other liberation movements in the region.

In October 1983, U.S. landing forces occupied the small Caribbean island of Grenada and captured the revolutionary government there. Within a few weeks, labor brigades then formed in many countries around the world, demonstratively supporting the sandinistic Nicaragua through their civil groundwork. The personal presence of thousands of Western Europeans, North and South Americans and Japanese in Nicaragua was supposed to form a “human shield” against a now feared military intervention, as happened in Grenada.

The field recordings used come from the first work assignment of the so-called “coffee brigade” at the turn of 1983/84.
