“Stomach full of hunger” is inspired by Wolfgang Borchert’s drama »Draußen vor der Tür« (“The man outside,” literally “Outside, in front of the door”, released 1947). It is the story of a returnee who finds no place in the society into which he arrives because he is reminded of the war and everyone’s involvement in it, which no one wants to hear about for the sake of their own survival. The war trauma, which the main character Beckmann cannot cope with, makes him an outsider and drives him to a suicide attempt, which fails. With this, the drama begins. Borchert leaves the ending open and with it the question of whether Beckmann’s integration can succeed at all.
